The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has highlighted significant progress in National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) membership coverage in the Dormaa West District of the Bono Region, with active membership rising from 89.01 percent in September 2025 to 90.25 per cent in September 2026.
Speaking at the commissioning of a new NHIA office in the district, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, said the achievement places Dormaa West above the 80 percent membership threshold used as an indicator of progress towards Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
The district has a population of approximately 54,428 people across more than 96 communities.
Dr. Asare Bampoe expressed appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama, the Minister of He alth, the Minister of Finance, its Board and other stakeholders for their support towards the retooling and strengthening of the Authority.
The CEO stressed that the new facility should go beyond serving as an administrative office and become a centre where NHIS members receive timely assistance and have their concerns addressed.
He also cautioned healthcare providers and staff against imposing illegal charges or top-ups on members for services covered under the NHIS, while urging officials to educate members about their rights.
According to him, sustainable healthcare delivery under the NHIS requires sustainable healthcare providers, prompting efforts to ensure prompt and predictable reimbursement.
He said it has also pursued a 50 percent increase in service tariffs and has paid healthcare providers nationwide about GH¢1.7 billion so far this year.
The NHIA CEO urged staff to take proper care of the new facility and ensure that it serves its intended purpose.
He admonished that the facility should ultimately represent access, responsiveness, accountability and trust, in line with efforts to strengthen the NHIS and advance Ghana’s journey towards Universal Health Coverage.
The Bono Regional Director of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Isaac Badu Amponsah, has described the former working conditions at the Dormaa West District Office as deplorable, citing cramped spaces, unreliable power supply and poor sanitation.
He said the situation created significant challenges for both staff and members, particularly the elderly, pregnant women and persons with special needs who visited the office to access NHIA services.
According to him, the concerns were promptly brought to the attention of the NHIA Chief Executive Officer, who responded swiftly with measures to improve the working environment and enhance service delivery at the district office.
Mr. Amponsah reaffirmed the commitment of the regional directorate to sustained dedication, hard work and professionalism as it works to advance the mandate of the NHIA and improve healthcare access across the Bono Region.
For his part, the Member of Parliament for Dormaa West Constituency, Vincent Oppong Asamoah, commended members of the community for their selfless commitment and active involvement in monitoring and supervising the project to ensure its successful completion.
He urged Assembly members, heads of institutions, community leaders and residents to take an active interest in development projects initiated by politicians within their communities by serving as watchdogs and monitors to ensure that contractors execute such projects on schedule and to the required standards.
