The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has directed that all forms of hawking, trading and other unauthorised activities under the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange cease immediately, warning that offenders will be arrested and prosecuted.

The directive was issued on Tuesday, June 16 during a working visit to the Okaikoi South Sub-Metropolitan District, where the Mayor led a team from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to inspect sanitation conditions, building permit compliance and the enforcement of Assembly by-laws.

As part of the exercise, AMA officials cleared food vendors, beggars and individuals sleeping under the Korle Klottey section of the interchange. The operation also targeted makeshift structures and other unauthorised activities that had taken over parts of the area.

Addressing residents and traders, the Mayor stressed that the space beneath the interchange was not designated for commercial activities, food vending, sleeping or any other unauthorized use.

“The Assembly will no longer tolerate the use of the area under the interchange for trading or other illegal activities. Anyone found engaging in such activities will be dealt with according to the law,” he warned.

According to the Mayor, the enforcement action forms part of broader efforts by the AMA to improve sanitation, ensure public safety and restore order within the capital city.

The inspection team also demolished illegal wooden structures erected along the shoulder of Otublohum Road near the Circle VIP Station.

Mr. Allotey noted that such structures contribute to congestion, poor sanitation and the obstruction of public spaces.

He further directed owners of drinking spots, managers of the VIP Station and cattle owners operating along Otublohum Road to clear and desilt choked gutters within 24 hours or face sanctions.

The Mayor reiterated the Assembly’s commitment to enforcing by-laws on sanitation, building permits and public order, urging residents, traders and business operators to cooperate with authorities in efforts to keep Accra clean, safe and orderly.
