The Scorpions of The Gambia staged a stunning comeback at the Accra Sports Stadium to worsen the plight of the Black Stars in the qualifiers to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The Scorpions came from two goals down to beat the Black Stars 4-2 in Group C of the qualifiers.
Ernest Nuamah had put the four-time African champions ahead in the 27th minute after defender Jerome Opoku was clipped in the leg by his marker in the penalty area.
Despite an initial uncertainty over who takes the penalty, Olympique Lyonnais winger Nuamah emerged to slot the ball home.
Barely five minutes later, Felix Afena-Gyan placed the ball in the same area of Baboucarr Gaye’s goal to double the lead for the Black Stars.
But just after four minutes, the tide turned as Ghana captain Gideon Mensah fouled his marker to conceded a penalty.
Muhammed Badamosi made no mistake as he beat goalkeeper Benjamin Asare in post.
A long throw-in by the Gambians found Omar Colley, who beat an offside trap to level for the Scorpions.
It was joy for the Gambian bench but frustration for Carlos Queiroz, who was Yellow-carded for seeming dissent with a Gambian official sent off by referee Mustapha Kechchaf.
With the scores at 2-2 in the second half, Mensah failed to control a half volley in his half, giving Ebrima Colley the advantage to beat Benjamin Asare.
He raced ahead of his marker, Mensah, in injury time as a smooth counter attack got him to get his second goal of the day.
The loss by the Black Stars see them winless since beating Panama 1-0 in their opening game of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Ghana are wallowing bottom of Group C in qualifying for the 2027 AFCON and will need extra energy to avoid a repeat of the failure of 2025.
