Residents within the Akosombo enclave in the Eastern region are calling on the government to evacuate them to the Saglemi Housing Unit until the floods in their vicinity recede.
Their call comes days after the Volta River Authority (VRA) spilled the Akosombo Dam which it said was exceeding the maximum volume of water it could take.
Speaking on Onua TV/FM’s Maakye Friday, October 13, 2023, Unit Committee Chairman of Sokpoe Electoral Area, John Agbotah, noted that releasing the empty buildings at Saglemi to the residents in the meantime will help them since they have no where to turn to at the moment.
Recountingy some of the challenges they have been facing since the dam was spilled, Mr. Agbotah said some residents have had to battle snakes for survival in their homes underneath the water which has become a big challenge for them.
According to him, residents were not informed about the development but woke up to the spillage which has come with much devastating effects.
They have had to survive on the benevolence of others who have few foods in their rooms since they have been trapped in the middle of the water per the Unit Committee Chair’s account.
Meanwhile, he indicated the Authority is yet to spill the water in its highest volumes, leaving the residents in fear.
The VRA began spillage of the dam as a result of a “consistent rise in the inflow pattern and water level of the Akosombo dam.”
Most residents in the affected areas are currently homeless and are appealing to the government to come to their aid.
Even though the residents say they were not informed of the development, the VRA says it informed its key stakeholders on September 12.
