Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Minister, Mahama Ayariga, says President John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have no objection to Ghana having a National Cathedral.
According to him, the party’s concern has always been about the location and the source of funding for the project.
At a courtesy call on him by the Christian Council of Ghana on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, the newly sworn-in Minister stressed the need for unity among Christian denominations to agree on a common position before engaging the President for direction.
He is proposing a roundtable meeting of leaders of the Catholic Church, Protestant denominations and other Christian organisations to have a dispassionate discussion on the project, especially its cost, location and financing.
“Based on what I pick from the conversations, then I will organise for us to engage with His Excellency, the President, for some direction as to how to proceed. I know for a fact that the President does not think there is anything wrong with the country having a national cathedral,” he said.
“Again, I know that the NDC as a party had issues with the location; is that okay? We had issues with funding sources. We just need to sit, all of us, around the table and build a consensus, and then the President will be able to lead us in the right direction,” he added.
Mr Ayariga said he is confident that if Christians present a united front, they can mobilise resources both in Ghana and abroad to build the Cathedral.
“If we secure a united front as Christians, I believe His Excellency President John Mahama will be able to lead us to wherever we want to go as a church,” he noted.
Using the National Mosque as an example, he said religious unity and international partnerships can help finance such national religious projects. He thus wants Christian leaders to set aside differences and agree on a common position before engaging President Mahama.
