Three illegal miners have died at Odumase-Santenso in the Asante Akyem Central municipality of the Ashanti region after an illegal mining pit collapsed on them.

Assembly member of the area, Isaac Kyei Andoh, confirmed the incident saying the pit collapsed and caved in on them.

He says the incident occurred on Friday, around 4 p.m. on Friday, August 7, 2026.

According to him, community members alerted him after the pit caved in, prompting efforts to rescue those trapped inside.

The deceased have been identified as two women and a man, all aged between 21 and 25.

The two deceased women, Andoh said, were residents of Bomeriso.

The bodies were recovered between 6:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m after the necessary customary rites had been performed at the scene before the bodies were conveyed to the mortuary.

Andoh said the victims were engaged in an illegal small-scale mining activity and were digging deep pits using makeshift equipment to extract gold.
