A galamsey pit at Manso Mpatasie near Manso Odaho in the Ashanti region has claimed the life of an Assistant Headmaster.

Akwasi Anane of Mpatasie D/A Junior High School in the Amansie South District died after falling into a galamsey pit.

The 47-year-old is said to have gone to the site to work around 9pm, Tuesday.

Reports indicate Mr. Anane who is also Secretary to the unit committee in the town had visited his mining concession in the late hours of Tuesday, October 4, 2022.

According to the District NADMO office, Akwasi Anane was supervising a galamsey activity on his site but portion of the pit where the assistant head teacher was standing caved in.

Effort to rescue him was not successful.

Despite not being active in the mining activities, George Duku Acheampong, the Assembly member of Nweneso Electoral Area, noted Mr. Anane had regularly been checking his concession.

“The teacher is a miner and he sponsors people to work for him whenever he is at school. Due to the fight against illegal mining, he has packed out of the site. Sometimes, you will have to go to ensure that no one steals from the site or mine your concession,” he said.

Mr. Duku also indicated, “since it was late, he missed his step and fell into a pit”. The victim doubles as a committee secretary so he is an important person in the community.
The community has been thrown into a state of mourning due to diverse roles played by the deceased in the area.

“The whole community is sad because the teacher has helped a lot of people in terms of education,” he told a Kumasi-based radio station.

The body has since been deposited at the St. Martin’s Hospital at Agroyesum for autopsy and preservation.
