A 13-year-old boy, Pious Nkansah, a.k.a. Nkrumah, has been shot dead at a mining company site at Adelekezu near Dadwen in the Axim District of the Western region.
The Western Regional Police Command has since launched investigations into the incident that occurred on Saturday, December 13, 2025, where several company properties were also destroyed.
When police visited the scene, they found two 4×4 SUV vehicles and two tipper trucks burnt. A pickup truck and a Toyota Land Cruiser were also damaged.
The destruction was allegedly carried out by some youth of the town.
Police preliminary investigations show the disturbances occurred after the youth of the town had a misunderstanding with the security personnel at the mining site. This was after the youth have allegedly attempted to invade the company’s concession.
According to reports, the young men attempted to seize a pump-action gun from one of the security men who resisted and fired a shot, hitting the boy.
Nkrumah was rushed to the Axim Government Hospital for treatment but was pronounced dead on arrival.
The death of the boy got the youth angry and went on rampage at the site, and set the company’s properties ablaze and threatened to kill workers at the site.
The police rescued 11 workers and arrested five suspects in connection with the incident.
A statement by the Western Regional Police Command and signed by the Head of Public Affairs Unit, Supt. Olivia Ewurabena Adiku, and issued on Sunday, December 14, 2025, named the arrested suspects as Gyenyame Owusu, aged 38; Matthew Asamah, 24; Nana Yaw, 15; Yaw Opoku, 16; and Kojo Agyei, 21.
