Broadcaster Blessed Godsbrain Smart has advised the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare to be careful to avoid being reshuffled.

He has asked the Police chief not to take lightly, what COP Alex Mensah and his colleagues started, leading to a probe into their plot which got leaked to the public.

During the Fabewoso segment of Maakye Tuesday, February 20, 2024, Captain Smart indicated that the plot to oust Dr. Dampare begun at a place in the Ashanti region and would likely be effected if the IGP takes things lightly.

“There is a place at Bekwai called Dominase. That’s where the plan to remove you started. If you joke with it, you’ll be changed. Be careful,” he cautioned.

‘I did not play any role in it’ – Dampare denies knowledge of being brain behind leaked tape

Three top police officers were hauled before a committee of inquiry after a leaked tape containing their voices became a matter of public concern due to its security implications.

The officers, together with a former Northern regional Chairman of the NPP, Daniel Bugri Naabu, were caught on the tape planning the removal of the IGP.

They said his continuous stay in office would hamper the electoral fortunes of the NPP in the 2024 elections and needed to be changed and replaced with a party man.

The IGP who subsequently appeared before the committee due to series of allegations about his leadership that popped up during the probe, expressed his disappointment over the development saying the allegations levelled against him by the three officers affected him, his family and his command.

He said he was surprised his own brothers could peddle such falsehoods against him without a shred of evidence to substantiate their claims.

“George is my big brother, Gyebi is my kid brother and Asare is my brother…..They made wild allegations against me without a shred of evidence. Those allegations have brought pain to me, my family and to my command,” the IGP said before the committee Tuesday, September 12, 2023.

The Director General in charge of Operations at the Ghana Police Service, COP Alex Mensah accused the IGP of not running the service properly when he appeared before the committee.

According to COP Alex Mensah, serving officers are unhappy with the IGP, adding that any independent investigation will affirm the claim.

“It is true; the current IGP is not managing the service well. And I will not deny this today or tomorrow. I will say it everywhere I go. You can do your own investigation within the service and you will know,” he told the committee.

Meanwhile, Captain Smart also advised the Chief of Defence Staff, Major General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, to be vigilant since his appointment makes it the second time in Africa a Major General has been promoted above his peers to assume a CDS role.

“CDS, this is the second time this thing has occurred in the whole of Africa, that a Major General was promoted amongst all his peers to become a CDS. You need to be careful for what happened at the first instance not to repeat itself here,” he forewarned.
