The Black Stars inched closer to qualification to the 2026 FIFA World Cup to be held in the USA, Mexico and Canada after a 5-0 win over Central African Republic in their penultimate qualifier.

A first-half goal by Mohammed Salisu was followed by strikes from Thomas Partey, Jordan Ayew, Alexander Djiku and Kamaldeen Sulemana to give Ghana the 5-0 win.

The results sends the 2010 World Cup quarter-finalists further atop Group I with 22 points.

They need a point in the final qualifier against Comoros to seal their place in the global tournament.

It all began in the 20th minute when a second header attempt by Salisu found the back of the net. His first attempt had gone off target.

However, another from a Kudus corner kick was well-connected by the AS Monaco defender to send the Ghanaians leading by a lone goal into the break.

It took six minutes into the second half for Sevilla man Partey to double the lead. It came after a melee between Ayew and a few CAR players.

After Mauritian referee Patrice Milazare restored calm for play to resume, the former Arsenal man took advantage of the situation to score for Ghana.

The Ghanaians scored from another free kick after Djiku’s header beat goalkeeper Dominique Youfeigane for the third goal.

Ayew himself made it 4-0 in the 71st minute before Kamaldeen scored his first ever goal for the team.

Ghana’s next and final qualifier is set for Sunday and at least a draw will see the four-time African champions through to their fifth World Cup.
