Stand-up comedian OB Amponsah has said one thrives in the comedy industry by using English Language compared to the local dialect.

His assertion is premised on the restriction on the Twi language on international platforms unlike the English Language.

He says unlike music where people can enjoy even if they don’t understand the lyrics, comedy must be understood by its audience.

OB whilst speaking with Felicia Osei on Onua FM’s ‘Adwuma Adwuma’ Thursday, December 15, 2022, said the matter could have been different even if subtitling could be possible during a live show.

He advised, however, that the Twi language should not be utterly discarded since it suits the Ghanaian audience perfectly compared to the English.

“If you want to go global, learn to build your punches in English. Unless you want to remain in Ghana. English is more universal. When you go to Nigeria for instance you can’t do a show in Twi.

“Comedy is not like music. Unless maybe you do subtitles when speaking Twi but you can’t use subtitles whilst doing a live show. So when it comes to Ghana, give the punches in Twi, when you go outside, you do it in English,” he indicated.
