Some concerned teachers in the Ashanti and Central regions have rejected calls by the leadership of the teacher unions over the revocation of the appointment of the new Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, Dr Eric Nkansah.

His appointment came after the former Director General, Prof. Kwasi Opoku Amankwah was sacked by the President.

Four teacher unions at a press conference in Accra criticised the appointment saying the Dr Nkansah is a banker and has not risen to the teaching rank to merit that poisition.

But the concerned teachers think otherwise. They say the former head of the GTEC has what it takes to handle the position, especially when his role is purely administrative and has also garnered a lot of experience in the classroom should the argument of thuse discrediting him hold.

Convenor for the concerned teachers, Nicholas Adu Berko explained why they have taken a swipe on the stance taken by the other unions.

“Usually when there is an issue, our respective Union leaders throw them to us at the circuit and district levels to make our contributions on what to do. But when the president mbetioned Mr. Eric Nkansah, nobody consulted us. We only saw our leadership saying they reject his appointment.

“Yes, on paper he is a banker but this is someone who has thought from the basic level up to the tertiary. He was teaching at the Kumasi Technical University, then Kumasi Polytechnic. Then he went to GES to head the Ghana Tertiary Education Council so when the lecturers issues came up and all he was the liaison between them and the government during their negotiations. And Director General is purely administrative. So how can you tell us such a person cannot be GES Director-General, ” he noted.
