The Director of Communications of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has suggested that the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) should be privatized.

It is his view that this will get the refinery functioning as expected.

Mr Ahiagbah said this while commenting on the commissioning of the 2 million barrels per annum Sentuo Oil Refinery by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

During the commissioning of the Sentuo Refinery, President Akufo-Addo stated that TOR was going to be fully revitalized after years of being dormant.

He said that having both the Tema Oil Refinery and the Sentuo Oil Refinery operational would enable Ghana to refine most of its oil locally, instead of relying on imported products.

Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh on his part urged foreign investors to join the energy sector, aiming to boost its performance.

Commenting on this on his X platform, Mr Ahiagbah said “The Refinery is scalable to 5 million barrels per annum. This outstanding achievement will impact Ghana’s foreign exchange position and price stability in the medium term.

“Maybe we should consider privatizing TOR…to get it working too. It has been down now for years and is just sapping resources.”
