Sammy Gyamfi has chided the Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Godfred Yeboah Dame, for the advice he offered the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on the Cecilia Dapaah matter.

The private legal practitioner who is also the National Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) it is not part of the A-G’s mandate to advise on what is necessary or otherwise when it comes to crime investigations. Instead, his own is to prosecute if he finds substance in a matter.

Speaking on TV3 Saturday, May 04, 2024, Sammy Gyamfi expressed shock over Mr. Dame’s action despite touting himself as a doyen of the law.

“He doesn’t even know his mandate. It’s like this man doesn’t know his job, this Godfred Dame who claims to be the all-knowing person when it comes to law in this country?

“With the consent of the Attorney-General in giving any advice is whether or not an act is lawful or not lawful. It’s not, his mandate doesn’t bother on what is necessary or unnecessary. Who is he to determine that you have a mandate to do something but it is not necessary? Is that part of the work of an Attorney General?” he quizzed.

Sammy Gyamfi’s comments stem from an advice given the EOCO by the A-G against conducting a probe into the money laundering allegations in the cash scandal involving former Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaah.

The matter was initially taken by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) and latter handed to the EOCO to continue when the OSP learnt there were some money laundering issues which its mandate does not permit the office to investigate.

Following the development, EOCO called on the A-G for an advice on the investigation where it was told that carrying out the probe would be unnecessary.
