Professor Ransford Gyampo of the University of Ghana has asked President John Dramani Mahama to focus on things that are of much importance to Ghanaians instead of the controversial National Cathedral project.
He says Ghanaians voted for him massively to address matters that are pressing to them, and not a reconsideration of a project that has garnered so much controversy.
Gyampo’s comments follow President Mahama’s decision to review the National Cathedral project to see if it is worth continuing, and possibly change the location from the centre of the city.

In a post on his Facebook Tuesday, January 14, 2025, Prof. Gyampo posed a number of questions to the President asking if he has signed any contract with Ghanaians to build a cathedral for God.
According to him, the National Cathedral was a personal promise from former President Akufo-Addo to God, and cannot be a priority for Mahama, when the project has generated so much controversy, amid the many issues Ghanaians want addressed instead of the project.
“Please, did you promise God that you will build a National Cathedral for Him, should you be elected again as President? Are you the Son of Mr. Akufo-Addo, like Solomon, the son of David who built a temple for God when his father wasn’t permitted to do so?
“Is the construction of a National Cathedral a priority concern for national development at this time that many have been impoverished because of greed, loot and unprecedented bad governance by your predecessor?” he questioned, asking the President to fill the hole instead of harnessing the idea to complete it.
“If your answers to the above are a NO, then please cover that expensive hole, using the end of service benefits of Mr Akufo Addo to defray part of the cost and let people culpable be charged for causing financial loss to the state,” he stated.
