Driven by a nationwide sanitation campaign initiated by President John Dramani Mahama, the West Mamprusi municipality is showing notable improvements in its sanitation practices, suggesting a greater sense of civic duty and awareness of public health.

Sanitation, crucial for public health and community well-being, has gained significant traction in the West Mamprusi municipality.

This follows President Mahama’s declaration of a national sanitation day, requiring all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to prioritize sanitation as a key performance indicator.

The goal is to foster a culture of cleanliness and environmental responsibility across the nation.

There’s been a clear change in how community members view sanitation. Initially, participation in the national sanitation day at Walewale was very low. Now residents are taking the lead by organizing weekly cleanup activities on their own.

This indicates a growing understanding of the importance of maintaining a clean and healthy environment.

Areas where people used to dump trash illegally have seen real progress with citizens avoiding unauthorized dumping spots.

In an interview, the West Mamprusi Municipal Environmental Protection Officer, Faustinus Achanba, mentioned that some individuals who broke sanitation laws were fined or warned. He believes this has helped people understand the importance of keeping the environment clean.

Notably, Walewale township looks cleaner now compared to before the cleanup initiative started.

Several vendors and shopkeepers told OnuaOnline that they are committed to keeping their business areas clean at all times, not just on the first Saturday of each month.

The MCE of West Mamprusi Municipal, Rabiu Alfose Jabba has pledged to ensure that Walewale township and its surrounding areas remain clean.

He has also urged opinion leaders, especially traditional leaders, to prioritize sanitation issues and not leave it solely to the assembly, encouraging them to participate in sanitation day activities to set an example.
