Ghanaian business mogul and philanthropist Ibrahim Mahama has set up an education fund to sponsor the academic journey of Melchizedek Adio Baafawiise, a 13-year-old physics prodigy who recently became the youngest student ever admitted to Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
The announcement followed a meeting between Mahama, Melchizedek, and his parents in Accra on February 3, 2025, where they discussed education, ambition, and the future of science in Ghana.
Recognizing the young scholar’s exceptional achievements, Mahama pledged full financial support to ensure his education remains uninterrupted.
As part of his commitment, Ibrahim Mahama donated an undisclosed amount to Melchizedek’s father, establishing an education fund to cover tuition, accommodation, and other essential academic costs throughout his studies at KNUST.
“Young minds like Melchizedek are the future of Ghana. It is our responsibility to support and nurture them so they can reach their full potential,” Mahama stated.
Melchizedek, a native of Bole in the Savannah Region, made national headlines after scoring 5 As and 3 Bs in the WASSCE at just 13 years old, securing admission to KNUST for a Bachelor of Science in Physics.
In addition to financial sponsorship, Ibrahim Mahama also promised Melchizedek an opportunity to train and work with his engineering company, Engineers and Planners, after completing his studies.
Melchizedek’s parents expressed profound gratitude for the life-changing support, highlighting how the education fund would relieve their financial burden and allow their son to focus on his academic pursuits.
