Ghana Premier League club, Karela United, have suspended midfielder Philip Flamini after he was remanded for allegedly defiling a teenager believed to be 13.

Flamini was arrested on Wednesday after the defiled girl’s father reported the incident to the police.

The Ellembelle District Social Welfare Officer, Jonas Kabutey revealed that the suspect pleaded guilty after interrogations at the Ellembelle District Court. He has therefore been asked to reappear in court a week later.

“At the Court, he confessed to defiling the girl. He alleges the victim rather lured him into committing the act. He has been remanded to reappear a week later,” Kubutey told Takoradi-based Connect FM on Wednesday.

Responding to the incident, Karela United have taken an initial action to suspend the 24-year-old while they hold on to police investigation.

In an official statement released on Thursday, the club announced that it has suspended the player pending the conclusion of an ongoing police investigation.

“The management of Karela United Football Club hereby announces that it has… suspended player [named withheld] pending the conclusion of an ongoing Police investigation into an allegation that he sexually abused a teenager,” the club said.

“Management will wait for the court’s final determination of the case before making a final decision concerning his future at the club.

“The Club will not make any further comments on this matter until the legal processes come to a final conclusion.”

Flamini last featured for the club on December 21, 2022, when Karela hosted their rivals Medeama SC at the Crosby Awuah Memorial Park in the ongoing Ghana Premier League.
