The Akan brands of the Media General conglomerate have launched a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) subsidiary.

The Onua Foundation, set afloat on the forenoon of Friday, December 8, 2023, brought together important personalities from Corporate Ghana, the Legislature, top hierarchy of the Media General Group, and the general public.

Speaking at the launch, the Special Guest of Honour who also launched the Foundation, Dr. Grace Obeng, CEO of FC Group of Companies, lauded “the pivotal role played by the two stations and their staff in the Dam Spillage Relief Fund project introduced by the Management of Media General and 3 Foundation to coordinate support for the victims of the spillage of water from the Kpong and Akosombo dams few months ago.”

In view of the above, she indicated that the Foundation that “will serve as the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) arm of the Onua Group” will help in “creating life impacting opportunity for persons with needs and challenges.”

“Onua Foundation also commits to implement humanitarian initiatives in partnership with listeners, viewers, clients and the public, to promote social inclusion and equitable access to basic necessities of life, particularly for the needy and deprived communities in Ghana,” Dr. Obeng added.

She entreated the public not to relent on their usual support to the Group in its benevolent activities since “it is love for the people to meet their need and strong commitment that will enable Onua Foundation to achieve their goal.”

On his part, General Manager of the Onua Group, Stephen Schandorf, indicated that “the Onua Foundation is being launched to create opportunities that enable us to partner with people and organisations to make the lives of our people better.”

Statistics from the World Health Organisation, Ghana Statistical Service, and the World Economic Forum’s Inclusive Development Index (2018) spell out several factors contributing to poverty in Ghana, “several of these challenges that we need to collectively deal with as a people” which Mr. Schandorf said, “is what Onua Foundation will seek to work with society to help address.”

He assured of Media General’s commitment to provide the needed support for the Foundation to thrive and “lift people out of their challenges and be known for making a difference in the lives of its constituents.”

The Head of News for Onua Group, Mr. Abu Issa Monnie, revealed in his Welcome Address that the need to establish the Foundation became urgent due to the floods caused by the spillage of water from the Akosombo and Kpong and dams.

He said, “the Onua Foundation is excited about the prospects of local philanthropy, and looks forward to working with Ghanaians of like minds, who care about the vulnerable and destitute in society. It is for this reason that we have as our Foundation’s tagline ‘BOAFO PA’- Good helper.”
