President Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has asked the Christian Council of Ghana and the Christian community to pray for understanding for the citizenry to know that, not all elected political officers are thieves, describing the assumption as unfortunate.

According to the President, some politicians would have been better off if they were at the private sector.

The President says state institutions work in the interest of the country but not the government, an understanding the citizenry must be encouraged to accept.

During a discussion with a delegation from the Christian Council at the Jubilee House after calling on him to introduce their new Chairman, Rt. Rev. Dr. Hilliard Dela Dogbe, the President said the Council has a greater stake in the determining the fortunes of the country, considering the fact that over 70 per cent of the citizens subscribe to Christianity, even though, Ghana is a secular state.

“Yes, our country is a secular state, all religions are welcomed, we appreciate the constitutional structure that we have. We also cannot forget over 70% of our population are self ascribed Christians so your position carries a lot of weight and a lot of responsibilities.

“I’m very encouraged by the responsibility you’ve taken upon yourself to pray for the nation and leaders. It’s an important responsibility and I welcome very much, these prayers. They are a source of encouragement, strength to me especially the prayer.

“We want to pray for an understanding in Ghana. It’s not everybody who is elected into office is a thief. There is an assumption in our country, unfortunately the assumption one may have that people who come into political office come to enrich themselves. Some of us would have been better off in the private sector,” President Akufo-Addo noted.

He assured the clergy of the government’s support for them to ensure they work effectively.

“The government will also make sure that in whatever way we can also help you in the consolidation of Christianity, we’ll also help you,” he assured.
