A senior political science lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr. Kwasi Amakye Boateng, has described the last political rallies conducted by the NPP and NDC as a “boot for boot campaign”.
The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) yesterday, Thursday, December 05, 2024, organised its last mega rally at Madina, a suburb of Accra, whilst the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) did same at the University of Ghana, Legon.
The two parties drew crowds from various parts of the capital city including those attending from other regions, where the two presidential candidates delivered their last campaign messages to the electorates.
Although this has been happening in previous elections, this is the first time the two parties organised their final rallies on the same day, same time and at venues that is just about a kilometre apart.
Analysing the two events, the political analyst indicated that the development is a depiction of how crucial this year’s polls are, considering the fact that each government goes home after every 8 years, and President Akufo-Addo’s determination to ensure that jinx is broken this time around.
In his analysis, Dr. Amakye Boateng told Captain Smart on Onua TV’s election coverage Friday, December 06, 2024, that the political parties have been changed after serving two terms of office since commencement of the Fourth Republic because none of them has devised a clear-cut developmental trajectory for the nation, making the citizenry change them every 8 years.
“The politicians over the years have not demonstrated commitment towards developing the country so the citizens tend to change them after spending 8 years in government,” he said in Twi.
Zooming in on the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration’s performance, he noted that the Ghanaian economy has suffered, especially juxtaposing the current indices with the utterances of the Vice President and flag bearer of the NPP, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
He was explicit that the state of the economy makes it obvious that the governing party will lose the polls.
“In the past 8 years, issues about the Ghanaian economy and finances has not been good. There are many things pointing to that with majority of them coming from Dr. Bawumia who spoke on economic fundamentals. Basing on previous records, it is evident that the NPP will go home this year.
“But Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is insisting they retain power and with the NDC also not being a weaker side, it has raised the tempo of the elections. So it was a boot for boot campaign they embarked on. So it was necessary they both had those rallies yesterday,” he indicated.
