The Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) has said it will not be able to participate in this year’s National Science and Maths Quiz. This is due to non availability of funds.
In a letter addressed to the Managing Director of Primetime, Organisers of the programme, dated Friday, October 3, 2025, and signed by the General Secretary of CHASS, Baro Primus, it said their invitation to the balloting and onward participation will not be possible.
“Referenced your letter dated September 2025 on the above subject matter, CHASS regrets to inform you that, schools will not be able to participate in the balloting and subsequently, the Quiz competition due to non availability of funds to Schools to mobilise and organise their students to take part,” the statement contained in some parts.
It, however, added that once the government make funds available, it will be able to participate in the programme.
“We want to assure the organisers that, as soon as government releases funds for that purpose, CHASS Will review its position and communicate to you accordingly.”
“We regret for any inconvenience this development will cause, while thanking you for your
understanding,” the statement added.
The NSMQ is an annual competition for all senior high schools in the country to showcase their prowess in Mathematics and Science through a quiz. It is aimed at promoting the study of science and mathematics among students.
It is also aimed at promoting a healthy academic rivalry among senior high schools and encourage students to develop a scientific and probing mind.
The competition consists of several rounds with varying question formats, including rounds for fundamental questions, a speed race, a “Problem of the Day,” true or false statements, and riddles.
Over the years, the NSMQ has grown into Ghana’s longest-running, independently produced television quiz show and has helped launch the careers of many top scientists and professionals.
With the maiden edition in 1993, the competition has inspired alumni to fund infrastructure projects like science labs for their alma maters to excel to gain bragging rights over their rival institutions.
