The Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has relaunched the National Sanitation Day, an initiative aimed at promoting cleanliness and environmental responsibility across Ghana.

The relaunch took place at the Institute of Local Government Studies at Madina, Accra, on Saturday, September 6, 2025.

In his statement, Minister Ibrahim emphasized the importance of environmental sanitation in public health and national development.

He noted that improper waste disposal, poor drainage management, and weak enforcement of sanitation bye-laws have led to grave consequences, including disease outbreaks and economic setbacks.

He therefore urged the public to practice proper disposal of waste and ensure cleanliness to avoid diseases for a healthier life.

The National Sanitation Day, which will be observed on the first Saturday of every month, aims to restore discipline and pride in public spaces, empower and mobilize local government structures, and foster citizen participation and accountability.

The initiative emphasizes collaboration, accountability, and sustained efforts to tackle the mounting sanitation challenges that confront the nation.

Minister Ibrahim urged all Ghanaians to participate actively in the monthly cleanup exercises, emphasizing that environmental sanitation is a shared responsibility that requires consistent and collective action from individuals, households, communities, and institutions.

The Ministry has introduced additional accountability measures, including a dedicated sanitation hotline and a central dashboard to track reports and performance of all assemblies across the country.

The launch of the National Sanitation Day is a significant step towards promoting cleanliness and environmental responsibility in Ghana.

With the support of the President and the active participation of all stakeholders, the initiative is expected to make a positive impact on the country’s development.
