Morocco have advanced to the round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup after beating Canada by 2 goals to 1 in their last group game.

The north Africans needed to avoid defeat to qualify as a draw would have seen them through. But they won the group after securing victory against Canada who were already out of the tournament prior to the game.

A disappointed Belgium side could not proceed past the group stage despite presenting a star studded side to the Mundial, ending their top four dream which was attained in the last edition in Russia.

Morocco join Senegal – England’s last-16 opponents –in the knockout stages as the first two Africans to make it out of their groups pending Ghana and Cameroon who take their last group games tomorrow.

It’s only the second time, after Algeria and Nigeria in 2014, that two African sides have progressed from the groups in the same tournament.

Who awaits Morocco remains uncertain but may face Germany who are likely to place second in their group.
