Some Concerned Citizens of Kroboland, made up of entrepreneurs and residents have asked the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), to restore power to the communities that have accepted the prepaid metre installation and settle its scores with the recalcitrant one.

The group says it’s insensitive on the part of the ECG to plunge the entire Kroboland into darkness when the said resistance that engineered the disconnection from the national grid is coming from a single community which constituents less than six per cent (6%) of the population they’ve denied electricity.

In a statement issued by the Concerned Citizens, it expressed disappointment in the mainstream media who have bypassed the facts of the melee and presented the issue to suggest the residents don’t want to pay tariffs.

It says the major and densely populated communities which are the economic hubs of Kroboland have welcomed the decision to install prepaid metres and shouldn’t be punished for the recalcitrance of a small community to worsen the already economic plight of the people.

“The installation of the prepaid meters have been welcomed by all the densely populated towns which form the economic hub for both districts. Residents Of Kpong and Somanya which are the most populated towns in Lower Manya and Yilo Krobo respectively have cooperated with ECG engineers on the installation of prepaid meters and have since been buying and using prepaid credit.

“Kpongunor, a small community in the lower Manya municipality which is at the center of the current situation is a minor community whose population is less than 6 percent of the entire population of Kroboland.

“It is however unfortunate that the rejection of the prepaid meters by this minor community in lower Manya Krobo is the grounds on which ECG has pulled off the plugs thereby plunging the entire Krobo area into darkness for over 14 days. This situation is affecting livelihoods, local businesses and shutting down the local economy which is already struggling to recover from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This insensitive decision by ECG is practically only affecting the major towns which are the economic hubs for both districts. Kpongunor is only a small community with little or no economic activities hence the unavailability of electricity isn’t too much a worry for them.

“We call on ECG to restore power supply to the communities that have accepted the prepaid meters whiles it takes steps to settle it scores with the recalcitrant community,” the statement indicated.
