Tension briefly gripped the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Regional Executives Election in the Western North region after disagreement emerged over the results of the chairmanship contest.

The disagreement followed the declaration of the results, with some supporters questioning the figures announced by the Electoral Committee.

The situation attracted the attention of the police, who moved in to secure the ballot box amid the confusion.

The election was held at the John Bita Clubhouse in Sefwi Wiawso, where delegates from eight of the region’s nine constituencies gathered to elect new regional executives.

Pious Vincent Abakah was declared the winner of the chairmanship race with 100 votes.

Former Juaboso District Chief Executive, Martha Kwayie Manu, polled 9 votes, while another contender, McDaniels, secured 85 votes.

However, the declaration of the results was met with disagreement from some party supporters, resulting in tension at the venue.

“We are not satisfied with the figures that have been announced. We believe there are issues that need to be clarified before the results can be accepted,” one of the aggrieved supporters said.

Another supporter called for calm and transparency in resolving the matter.

“We want the process to be transparent. If there is a concern with the results, it should be properly addressed rather than allowing the situation to escalate,” the supporter said.

Police officers subsequently secured the ballot box as party officials worked to calm the situation and prevent the disagreement from escalating.

Despite the tension, the election produced new regional executives who are expected to lead the party’s efforts to rebuild its structures and strengthen its grassroots base ahead of the 2028 general election.

The newly elected Regional Chairman, Pious Vincent Abakah, has pledged to unite the party and introduce new strategies aimed at reclaiming parliamentary seats lost to the National Democratic Congress in the 2024 election.

“Our focus now is to unite the party, strengthen our structures and work together to win back the seats we lost in 2024,” Mr Abakah said.

The new leadership is expected to begin work on rebuilding confidence among the rank and file as the party prepares for the 2028 general election.
