Since Mr. Moses Armah acquired Kessben FC in 2010 and officially transformed the club into Medeama SC in 2011, the club has undergone a remarkable transformation and established itself as one of the most successful clubs in Ghanaian football.
Medeama have won six major domestic trophies — two Ghana Premier League titles, two MTN FA Cups and two Ghana Super Cups — placing them behind only Asante Kotoko, who have 12 major titles based on the criteria used in this analysis.
That achievement represents an extraordinary rise for a club that has spent just over a decade at the highest level of Ghanaian football.
In terms of major domestic trophies won during this period, clubs such as Hearts of Oak, the now-defunct AshantiGold SC, Aduana FC and Berekum Chelsea have not matched Medeama’s haul.
The club’s rise deserves considerable credit. At the heart of it has been the leadership and financial commitment of its owner and president, Mr. Moses Armah, popularly known as Mospacka.
He has been supported by Vice President Mrs. Rose Linet Osei Bonsu, successive board and management members, technical teams, coaches, players and other stakeholders who have all contributed to Medeama’s remarkable journey.
MEDEAMA’S CAF JOURNEY
One of the most fascinating aspects of Medeama’s growth is their performance in CAF inter-club competitions.
Since 2010, Medeama have arguably been among Ghana’s most consistent representatives on the continental stage.
While continental success cannot be measured solely by trophies, Medeama’s record in CAF competitions demonstrates a willingness and ability to compete beyond Ghana’s borders.
During the period under consideration, Medeama have featured in three major CAF campaigns, reaching the group stage twice — in the 2016 CAF Confederation Cup and the 2023 CAF Champions League — while also reaching the play-off stage of the 2014 CAF Confederation Cup.
2014 — A PROMISING CAF DEBUT
After winning the MTN FA Cup in 2013, Medeama made their CAF debut in the 2014 CAF Confederation Cup.
They defeated Morocco’s Maghreb de Fès 4–2 on aggregate before eliminating Zambia’s ZESCO United 2–1 on aggregate to reach the play-off round.
In the play-off, Medeama faced AC Léopards of Congo. The two legs ended 2–2 on aggregate, but AC Léopards progressed after winning 5–4 on penalties.
Although Medeama fell short of reaching the group stage, the campaign announced the club as a serious force on the continental stage.
2016 — THE PLAY-OFF BREAKTHROUGH
Medeama returned to the CAF Confederation Cup in 2016 and produced what was, at the time, their best continental campaign.
They defeated Libya’s Al-Ittihad Tripoli 2–1 on aggregate in the first round before eliminating Sudan’s Al-Ahly Shendi 2–0 on aggregate in the second round.
Then came one of the most memorable moments in the club’s continental history.
Medeama faced South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns in the final play-off. The tie ended 3–3 on aggregate, but Medeama progressed under the away-goals rule.
After losing 3–1 in South Africa, Medeama produced a sensational 2–0 victory at the Essipong Sports Stadium to secure qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup group stage.
That victory remains one of the most memorable continental achievements by a Ghanaian club in the modern era.
2023 — MEDEAMA REACH THE CAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE GROUP STAGE
In 2023, Medeama achieved another historic milestone by making their maiden appearance in the CAF Champions League after winning their first-ever Ghana Premier League title.
They defeated Nigeria’s Remo Stars in the first round before eliminating Guinean giants Horoya AC in the second round to secure qualification for the group stage.
Medeama were drawn in Group D alongside African giants Al Ahly of Egypt, CR Belouizdad of Algeria and Young Africans of Tanzania.
Although Medeama secured only four points and failed to progress to the quarter-finals, reaching the group stage of Africa’s premier club competition represented another significant milestone in the club’s development.
For a club that had only been established in its current form in 2011, the achievement was remarkable.
SO, WHAT IS THE BACKBONE OF MEDEAMA’S SUCCESS?
The answer is simple: continuous investment, commitment and ambition.
Since taking over the club in 2010, Mr. Moses Armah has demonstrated a strong financial commitment to Medeama and has consistently invested in building competitive teams.
In a recent interview with Medeamaa FM, Mr. Armah disclosed that he spends approximately US$800,000 in a single season on the club.
For a club to consistently attract quality players, retain key personnel and assemble competitive technical teams, financial stability is critical.
Medeama’s recruitment activities ahead of the upcoming season provide another indication of their growing financial strength.
The club has competed with established sides such as Hearts of Oak, Asante Kotoko and Aduana FC for the signatures of players and has successfully secured some of its targets.
This suggests that Medeama are not resting on their achievements after winning their second league title.
Instead, the club appears determined to compete for every available trophy in the coming season.
BRANDING AND SOCIAL MEDIA PRESENCE
Anyone who closely follows Ghanaian football will recognise that Medeama are either the best or among the best-branded clubs in the country.
Their social media presence has become an important part of their identity.
The club has increasingly embraced the principles of modern football marketing — from match-day content and player announcements to sponsor activations and fan engagement.
In an era where football clubs must sell not only football but also a brand, Medeama appear to have understood the assignment.
Their digital communication has helped the club project its identity beyond the stadium and reach supporters, sponsors and football followers across Ghana and beyond.
CREATING VALUE FOR SPONSORS
Another important factor behind Medeama’s growing commercial appeal is their ability to provide visibility and mileage for brands associated with the club.
The club recently entered into a sponsorship agreement with Peeva Mineral Water, and Medeama have actively promoted the partnership through their various communication platforms.
For potential sponsors looking to associate with a Ghana Premier League club, Medeama present a compelling proposition.
Their growing brand, digital presence, fan base and media visibility provide commercial opportunities for companies seeking to connect with football audiences.
Medeama SC can therefore serve as a strong platform for brands seeking visibility through Ghanaian football.
PROMOTING HOME MATCHES AND ATTRACTING FANS
Another area where Medeama have demonstrated creativity is in the promotion of their home matches.
The club has developed a strategy of producing jingles for almost every home fixture. These jingles are mostly voiced by the evergreen Seth Kwame Dzotoko, a Tarkwarian whose distinctive voice has become familiar to many listeners in the region.
Medeama also maintain strong relationships with radio stations across Tarkwa-Nsuaem and the Prestea-Huni Valley Municipality, helping the club promote its matches through radio.
Beyond the jingles, members of the communication team visit radio stations to promote upcoming fixtures, engage presenters and create awareness around the matches.
The club complements these traditional media activities with social media content, ensuring that match promotions reach both radio audiences and the growing number of fans who consume football content online.
This combination of traditional and digital communication has become an important part of Medeama’s match-day strategy.
THE MEDEAMA MODEL
The story of Medeama SC is bigger than six major trophies.
It is a story of investment, administration, recruitment, branding, marketing, sponsorship, media engagement and, most importantly, a sustained ambition to compete at the highest level.
From the acquisition of Kessben FC in 2010 to the transformation into Medeama SC, the club has steadily built a reputation as one of the major forces in Ghanaian football.
Their domestic success has been impressive, but their performances in CAF competitions have also demonstrated that Medeama are capable of competing beyond Ghana.
The challenge now is to sustain that progress.
Winning trophies is difficult. Building a structure capable of consistently competing for trophies is even more difficult.
Medeama SC have taken significant steps in that direction.
If the club can maintain its investment, strengthen its administration, continue developing its brand and consistently compete on both the domestic and continental fronts, its place among Ghana’s football giants will become increasingly difficult to dispute.
The rise of Medeama SC is no longer a surprise.
It is the result of deliberate investment, sustained ambition and a growing understanding of what it takes to build a modern football club capable of competing, winning and creating a lasting legacy.
From Kessben FC to Medeama SC, the journey has been remarkable.
And the story may still be far from its final chapter.
