Executive Director of Global InforAnalytics, Mussa Dankwah, has said that his office is going to conduct a poll on the reduction in cocoa prices to scientifically ascertain the views of Ghanaians on this decision by the government.

He said this will form part of the April 2026 poll, but data collection will start from 20th March 2026

In a Facebook post, Mussa Dankwah said “We never shy away from polling on issues of national importance. Just as you asked us to poll on the galamsey, which we did and some of you did not like the outcome, we will poll on the cocoa price hair cut too, rest assured. We also recognise your call on us to conduct such a poll, instead of the others, as a recognition of our credibility even as you troll us on this app. So, that you can have input into the framing of the question, here is what we propose to ask voters across the country, ‘the government has announced a reduction in the farm gate price for cocoa, citing collapse of the commodity on the world market as an excuse, and farmers are registering their displeasure at the decision. Please indicate your level of disagreement or agreement with the decision to cut farm gate prices for cocoa.

“If you have a better and more objective way of posing this question, please let’s hear from you. This will form part of the April 2026 poll, but data collection will start from 20th March 2026.”

On Thursday, February 12 the Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson announced that the government has reduced the prices of cocoa to 2,587 Cedis per bag.

He said during a press conference in Accra on Thursdfay Febraury 12 , that the reduction takes immediate effect.

He said ,”Wasteful and uncontrolled expenditure practices are to be curtailed immediately. The world market price has dropped significantly from the average of 7,200 tones to 4,100 per tone, making Ghana’s cocoa beans uncompetitive and creating liquidity challenges.

“To address this, the Producer Price Review Committee, PPLC, met this afternoon under my chairmanship to assess the challenges facing the sector and review the producer price for the remainder of the 2025-2026 crop year.

“In order to cushion the farmer, the PPLC has recommended that the farmer be paid 90% of the achieved gross FOB of 4,200 US dollars per ton to mitigate the adverse impact on the farmer as a result of the fall in the world market price. As a result of that, the PPLC thereby announces that effective today, Thursday, 12 February 2026, the new producer price for the remainder of the 2025-2026 crop season will now be 41,392 Ghana cedis per ton and 2,587 Ghana cedis per bag.

“This measure has become necessary to reflect the reality of the world market price of cocoa, ensure the injection of immediate liquidity for expedited payment of farmers and guarantee the sustainability of our cocoa sector.

“In conclusion, government wishes to convey its sincere appreciation to the Ghanaian cocoa farmer and all stakeholders for their forbearance and sacrifice over the years. Cocoa has always been the mainstay of our economy. I wish to assure them that these reforms will protect the interest of the cocoa farmer and the cocoa sector.”
