The Vice President, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has reaffirmed the government’s resolve to distribute sanitary pads to adolescent across the country.
She says the initiative will help address part of the many challenges faced by young girls who cannot provide sanitary pads for themselves as a result of some reasons.
The Professor was speaking Saturday, March 08, 2025, during the commemoration of International Women’s Day, on the theme: “Resetting the Agenda for Women: Accelerating Action on Women’s Rights, Equity, and Empowerment”, when she made the comments.
In a statement issued by her Press Secretary and Spokesperson, Ama Pratt, on Saturday March 08, she indicated that the Vice President has directed the Minister of Education to make the sanitary pad distribution as part of the sector’s priority areas.
“She highlighted the inclusion of sanitary pad distribution in the government’s agenda and the directive given the Minister for Education to take immediate action to address challenges faced by young girls,” portions of the statement contained.
She also called for a year-long dialogue on issues pertaining to women, rather than waiting on days like the International Women’s Day before matters relating to women are brought to the fore.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, as part of her address, also “urged all women to acknowledge the achievements made thus far while recognizing the need for sustained efforts to break barriers and create opportunities for the next generation.”
The former Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, also highlighted on the government’s plans to expand “women’s leadership, strengthening legal protections against gender-based violence, and addressing systemic issues such as child marriage, female genital mutilation, and the high dropout rates among girls in schools.”
