Ghana Premier League giants Hearts of Oak have called on their fans to continue to be ambassadors of peace and good sportsmanship.
“Let the spirit of Phobia be one of unwavering support for our team, respect for our opponents, and a commitment to creating a safe and enjoyable atmosphere for everyone.”
These were contained in a statement issued on Friday, May 9 to mark 24 years after Ghana suffered its worst stadium disaster.
About 126 fans lost their lives from a stampede at the Accra Sports Stadium after a Hearts of Oak-Asante Kotoko midweek game.
Police officers fired tear gas at rioting fans, leaving them to get suffocated at the entrance of a locked gate.
“As a club, Accra Hearts of Oak will never forget this tragedy,” the club statement said.
“It serves as a constant reminder of the importance of safety, security and well being of every single supporter who comes to cheer us on.
“We are committed to ensuring that our stadiums are places of joy, unity and passionate support, free from any form of violence.”
The club extended sympathies to families and loved ones of the departed, praying that time continues to bring solace and strength to those left behind.
“Together, we stand in remembrance, and together, we move forward with a renewed commitment to the safety and spirit of the beautiful game,” the statement concluded.
