An eight-year-old boy has drowned at Kubugu in the Mamprugu Moagduri district of the North East region plunging the entire community into mourning.
Adam Mujaheed, the deceased, reportedly drowned in an abandoned brick-making pit that had been filled with water after a heavy rainfall over the weekend.
Reports indicate the young boy accidentally fell into the pit which had been flooded after the rains whilst playing with his friends after school on Tuesday, July 15.
Officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), who were in the community assessing the impact of the flood, received reports of the incident and rushed to the scene.
OnuaOnline is learning that the young boy was pronounced dead after being pulled from the pit and rushed to a nearby health facility.
Upon hearing the news, the boy’s mother, who was overwhelmed with grief, collapsed and was also rushed to the hospital. Meanwhile, she has now been stabilised.
The North East Regional Director of NADMO, Alhaji Tahiru Rafiu, who confirmed the news to Graphic Online indicated that the body has been given to the boy’s family to bury him in accordance with Islamic customs.
Aside from the drowning, some structures in the community were also flooded, leaving many residents displaced.
NADMO officials have been deployed to the area to assess the full extent of the damage caused by the flooding.
Rafiu admonished the residents to take extra safety measures during the rainy season to prevent such incidents, while reaffirming NADMO’s commitment to supporting the affected residents.
The Organisation, he noted, has also intensified its education campaign in flood-prone communities, encouraging residents to move to safer, elevated areas to prevent further tragedies.
