The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has intercepted over 700 slabs of suspected narcotic substances and arrested a commercial driver during a routine operation at Asanso.

Addressing the media, the Regional Commander, DCOP Joseph Hammond Nyaaba, said the arrest was made on January 26, 2026, by officers of the Bekwai District Command while conducting a snap-check along the Bekwai–Aputuogya road.

According to DCOP Nyaaba, at about 7:30 p.m., the police stopped a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter bus with registration number AC 718-25 at check point and “upon thorough search of the vehicle, the team discovered nine nylon sacks containing seven hundred and fourteen (714) slabs of compressed dried leaves, suspected to be Indian hemp.

The driver, Atampugri Akanyani, aged 50, was immediately arrested for questioning.

During interrogation, he told police that the consignment was handed to him by an unknown person at the Kejetia Lorry Station in Kumasi and was to be delivered to another unidentified person at Obuasi for a fee of six hundred Ghana cedis.

DCOP Nyaaba stated that the suspected narcotic substances have been retained as exhibits to aid ongoing investigations, while the vehicle involved has been impounded. He further confirmed that the suspect has been put before court for the necessary legal action.

The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has reiterated its commitment to combating drug trafficking and other criminal activities in the region.

The Command says it will continue to intensify snap-check operations and intelligence-led policing to ensure the safety and security of residents.

DCOP Joseph Hammond Nyaaba also warned individuals involved in the transportation and distribution of narcotic substances that the Ashanti South Region remains a no-go area for criminal activities.
