The Ministry of Sport, Arts and Culture of South Africa has clarified a remark made by the sector’s Deputy Minister that the country will host next month’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON 2026).
A statement issued by the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, explained that Madam Peace Mabe’s announcement only “reflects government’s longstanding engagement on supporting African football and South Africa’s confidence in its proven ability to host major international sporting events”.
“They do not constitute a formal confirmation or assumption of hosting responsibilities.”
Ms Mabe had told a gathering at the Hollywoodbets Super League Awards that the Banyana Banyana will host the 2026 WAFCON, which also serves as qualifiers for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The statement noted that South Africa had expressed its willingness to support CAF if necessary should alternative arrangements be necessary regarding WAFCON 2026 hosts.
It admitted that this are just contingencies by CAF for similar tournaments.
“At this stage, no formal decision has been taken to relocate the tournament and Morocco remains the officially designated host of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
” CAF has not yet triggered any alternative hosting process.”
