The Local Government Service Workers Union (LGSWU) has announced that it will join a nationwide strike declared by the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) if government fails to implement an agreed enhanced salary structure and improved conditions of service.

The industrial action is scheduled to begin on March 9, 2026.

In a statement signed by the Union’s General Secretary, Christopher Abokah, the leadership said the decision was reached unanimously at a Joint Management and Finance Committee meeting held on Friday, February 20, 2026.

“The leadership of the Local Government Workers Union of the Trades Union Congress wishes to inform all members that at a Joint Management and Finance Committee meeting held on Friday, February 20, 2026, the Union unanimously resolved to support the industrial action declared by CLOGSAG-Ghana concerning the delay in the implementation of an enhanced salary structure and other conditions of service for staff of the Local Government Service,” the statement said.

According to the Union, the prolonged delay has had serious consequences for its members.

“The continued delay in the implementation of this salary structure has negatively affected staff morale and economic well-being and therefore warrants collective action,” the statement noted.

Mr. Abokah stressed that the matter is a legitimate labour concern that demands unity among workers.

“After careful deliberation, the Union is convinced that this is a legitimate labour issue that requires unity and solidarity among staff of the Local Government Service,” he said.

He added that a united front remains the most effective means of achieving the desired outcome.

“The Union believes that only through a united front can meaningful progress be made toward securing fair and improved remuneration for our members,” the statement added.

The Union has therefore directed its members nationwide to prepare to withdraw their services should government fail to meet its obligations.

“In view of the above, all members of the Union are hereby directed to embark on a nationwide strike with effect from 9th March 2026 should government fail to honour its side of the bargain,” the statement said.

The Union reaffirmed its commitment to its members, concluding: “We remain committed to the welfare of all staff of the Local Government Service.”
