Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has listed what he describes as the “notable gains” from President Dramani Mahama’s official engagements in China.
As part of President Mahama’s visit to China for the world leaders meeting on women, he engaged with Chinese President, Xi Jinping, to deepen bilateral trade between the two countries.
According to Ablakwa, the two Presidents have agreed to promote sustainable environmental practices by investing in green transitions and dealing with illegal mining, a canker that has bedeviled Ghana’s environment for years.
Also, the two governments arrived at a consensus to promote infrastructure in Ghana, including a lift in the railway sector, a second gas processing plant, the Big Push, 24-hour economy and the President Mahama’s new green city initiative.
Apart from a 200 million RMB grant from President Xi to be used for a developmental project in Ghana as may be determined by the Mahama administration, the two also finalised on a 0% tariff agreement which is expected to be signed by October 28, 2025.
“Ghana is set to become the second African country to seal a 0% tariff agreement with China and usher a new era of enhanced and unimpeded trade. China is Ghana’s largest bilateral trading partner with 2024 trade volumes exceeding US$11.8billion.”
Ablakwa added that Ghana will put up a first of its kind US$150 million glass float factory in the Western Region, whereas a special conssideration was sought for African Women entrepreneurs “under President XI’s US$100million package and Capacity Building Drive for 50,000 women.”
It is expected that President Mahama’s recent visits to Asia, –first in Japan and then Singapore, and now China –will yield positive fruits for Ghana.
