Residents of Yahayili, a farming community in the East Gonja Municipality of the Savannah Region have organized a communal labour to fix portions of a 9 kilometer Kunshi-Yahayili road which has been washed away by the recent heavy rains.
The road is one of the deplorable feeder roads in the Municipality which has over the years received little attention.
The residents who are farmers told Onuaonline the decision to undertake the exercise was to enhance the carting of their farm produce to Salaga and other market centres.
“Yam and some cereals are produced here in high quantity and it’s always difficult transporting them to the markets resulting in the produce going bad hence the need for this communal exercise,” they expressed.
A farmer, Wumbei Sofo indicated, market women are unable to travel to the community to buy their farm produce due to the porous nature of the road.
“Nobody comes here during the rainy season. Not even government officials because their cars will get stuck”
“Transporting our sick relatives to Salaga is also a problem. We have to manage with them on motorbikes” he lamented.

Municipal Chief Executive for East Gonja Richard Broni who was informed of the exercise mobilised tipper trucks and a grader to assist in the filling and grading portions of the road.
He applauded the residents for the communal spirit and admonished other communities to initiate such self help projects for the assembly to assist.
He said several roads from the Municipality will in the coming days see some work done on them to open up the area for economic development.
