The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) says it on Thursday, February 5, 2026, at 0851 hours, responded to a tragic drowning incident involving Matthew Mahama, a 14-year-old boy, at Fiapre Catholic Junction on the Sunyani Ring Road in the Bono Region.
A GNFS rescue team led by STNO II Clement Takyi from the Sunyani Municipal Fire Station was promptly dispatched to the scene and successfully searched for and retrieved the body of the boy, who had gone swimming with friends in a river at Fiapre.
“The lifeless body was retrieved and handed over to the Ghana Police Service at the scene for preservation and further investigation,” a press release dated February 7 indicated.
“The Ghana National Fire Service extends its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and urges the public to exercise extreme caution around water bodies. The GNFS remains committed to public education on drowning prevention and to responding swiftly and professionally to emergencies to save lives,” the release signed by the Bono Regional Public Rleations Officer, Kwame Adomako Antwi, stated.
