The Wa Technical Institute (Wa Tech) in the Wa Municipality of the Upper West region has been temporarily closed down for a week following disturbances by learners on Wednesday, November 19, 2025.
The campus of the TVET Institute was in chaos as learners went on a rampage, causing massive destruction to the school and private properties, including vehicles, a container shop, and the school administration block, among others.
As the cause of their actions has not yet been disclosed, initial reports suggest that the incident involved a dispute between some students and local residents over a mobile phone.
The Ministry of Education on Saturday, November 22, 2025, strongly condemned the disturbances.
Dr Clement Apark, the Deputy Minister of Education, who briefed journalists shortly after a closed-door meeting with management and an assessment of the damages during his visit to the area, said a committee has been formed and tasked with investigating the incident.
He said they were given seven days to come out with their findings and recommend sanctions. He added that the government will not tolerate such behaviour and called for strict disciplinary measures against those involved in the destruction.
Saaka Adams, the acting Regional Director of Ghana TVET, who also serves as the Principal of Wa Technical Institute, has today Sunday, November 23, 2025, announced a week long closure of the training institute as part of measure to curtail the situation and put in measures to revamp.
Though police have since been deployed to the area, no arrests have been made yet as investigations remain ongoing.
This comes barely two months after Learners at Issa Technical Institute in the same Region staged a protest over the poor quality of meals served by the school authorities.
