Asante Kotoko returned to the top of the Ghana Premier League after a 2-0 win over Legon Cities on Sunday, March 9.
It was a resumption of the League following weeks of no action due to the unfortunate stabbing to death of staunch Asante Kotoko fan Francis Yaw Frimpong, popularly known as Nana Pooley.
The Porcupine Warriors returned to the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, a venue which was flagged to have failed the latest inspection by the Club Licensing Department of the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
GFA approves five venues for GPL resumption; Hearts, Kotoko affected
But it was an inspiration from the February 2 incident in Nsoatre as Asante Kotoko scored in each half to secure the table-topping win.
Patrick Asiedu began it all in the first half and in-form goal poacher Kwame Poku made it 2-0 with a couple of minutes to end proceedings.
The win gives Asante Kotoko a total of 37 points, at par with Bibiani Gold Stars SC, who handed Nations FC a 1-0 defeat.
Kotoko and Gold Stars, therefore, leapfrog Hearts of Oak, whose 2-0 win over Young Apostles a day earlier sent them temporarily to the summit of the log.
Asante Kotoko’s next game will be against champions FC Samartex at the Nsenkyire Sports Arena in Samreboi.
Sunday’s results from Kumasi will not be welcomed by Legon Cities, who still wallow in the relegation zone.
They currently have 17 points and will face former champions Berekum Chelsea in their next game.
