Some staff of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) have said that they have not been paid for the past 11 months although they continue to work.
Speaking on Ghanakoma morning show on Akoma 87.9fm in Kumasi with Sir John, on Thursday, December 4, the Communications Officer at NADMO Ghana, Harrison Kojo Abbah, revealed that for almost 11 months, some staff have not been paid.
He raised serious concerns about the bad conditions of service for NADMO staff, describing them as “nothing to write home about”.
He touched on lack of a formal document outlining terms of service for the staff of NADMO.
He also disclosed that the situation has contributed to a wave of staff exit, blaming it on poor salaries and lack of promotions as key issues for the exit.
“There is no formal document explaining conditions of service for our staff members “, he revealed. “Most of them are leaving due to poor salary structure and the absence of career progression.
“Many district directors have not been paid for almost 11 months,” he added.
He pointed out that, despite the challenges, NADMO is doing everything possible to save the situation.
He said they put in a lot of measures to prevent flooding this year as it used to be over the years.
“We initiated our antiflood emergency response plan,” he stated. This includes district and regional NADMO teams triggering their operational strategies.
He expressed serious concern about NADMO’s financial sustainability, saying that the current budget allocation is not enough.
“The fund is not sustainable,” he stated.
But we do have measures in place to request emergency support when needed.
Some analysts have expressed surprise about the non-payment of salaries for close to 11 months, revealing this could affect the quality of work of staff as relief items meant for donation could be pilfered by these unpaid workers who must survive.
