The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has named former AFCON-winning coach with Cameroon Winfried Schäfer as the Technical Advisor for the Black Stars.

The German tactician has also been appointed as the Director of Football at the FA.

This follows changes made to the Technical Team of the senior national men’s soccer team.

It comes after a poor run in the qualifiers for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), for which Ghana failed to qualify after going winless in six games.

The disappointing outcome sparked calls for the sacking of the coach, Otto Addo, and his backroom staff.

However, on Tuesday, January 29, the GFA announced changes.

Aside Schäfer, U-20 Head Coach Desmond Ofei has been appointed as Assistant to Otto Addo.

He joins John Paintsil as the assistants.

Fatawu Dauda has been retained as the Goalkeepers Coach with Derrick Bonsu coming in as Athletics Coach.

A Chief Video Analyst, Gregory De Grauwe, has also been appointed to assist Video Analyst Awal Salifu Kamin.

Schäfer, who won the African Cup of Nations with Cameroon at Mali 2002, will be expected to work closely with Head Coach Otto Addo to build a winsome Black Stars team.

He assumes the role having excelled in a managerial career, spanning over four decades.

Aside Cameroon, Schäfer worked with the Thailand and Jamaica national teams as well as European clubs including Borussia Monchengladbach, Karlsruher SC, VFB Stuttgart and Borussia Berlin.
